Cardiology MRI Ultrasound
BIOMED SCAN Ecografie imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of internal body structures without the use of radiation (x-rays). This noninvasive procedure provides valuable information about heart and blood vessel function and structure. It can detect and diagnose many conditions, including aneurysms (widening or weakening of a blood vessel), heart valve disease, and tumors. MRI also can monitor changes in the size of major blood vessels over time, such as those caused by diabetes.
MRI is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than the iodine-based contrast material used for CT and x-ray imaging of the heart. However, the MRI scan requires you to be very still. If you are claustrophobic or have a fear of small spaces, you may want to discuss alternatives with your doctor before scheduling this exam.
Understanding Cardiology MRI vs. Ultrasound: Which Imaging Technique Is Right for You
A more detailed picture of the heart can be obtained by combining cardiac MRI with ultrasound imaging of the heart, known as intracardiac echo or transesophageal echo. With a catheter inserted through a vein in your child’s leg, doctors can insert a small ultrasound probe (about the size of a pencil tip) to take pictures of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. This is performed while your child is asleep under general anesthesia, usually as part of a catheterization procedure to repair a hole in the heart called atrial septal defect.
We have developed an MR-US hybrid system, which combines an MR scanner with a continuous US scanning device and a feature-motion tracking algorithm to adapt the position of the MRI sequence in real-time. This results in a reduced MR image blurring during cardiac motion and allows for an optimal combination of cardiac MRI and intracardiac echo.
