Choosing the Best Deck Boards
The best deck boards are ones that balance aesthetics and durability. Choosing a material starts with figuring out how you’ll use your outdoor space, whether you want to entertain guests or relax quietly. Then you can decide what color and texture of wood you like best. Then you need to think about how you’ll fasten the deck down, which affects its cost and look (do you want screw heads to show or not).
Traditional wood
Natural wood is a classic choice for decking. It’s available in a variety of shades and textures, but it comes with pros and cons. While the most budget-friendly option, it’s prone to sagging and bending and requires more maintenance than other materials. Plus, it’s a good food source for termites and carpenter ants. But if you’re willing to spend the extra money, preservative chemicals like copper azole, type C (CA-C), can help ward off rot and insects.
Composite wood
Over the years, manufacturers have developed composite boards that look more and more like real wood. They may be hollow or capped. Hollow composites are lighter but don’t hold up as well underfoot, while capped boards have synthetic cores and coatings that protect against staining, discoloration, and the elements.
The popular Trex line, for example, offers a range of colors and textures that are designed to complement different homes. But no matter which composite you choose, keep in mind that it will require annual maintenance, including re-staining and regular cleaning to maintain its appearance. Also, some types of composites are scuffed easily by furniture and frisky pets. Light scratches can’t be sanded out but tend to blend in over time. And, as with some hardwoods, dark composites can become hot underfoot in the sun.
