A certificate is a specialized data structure that describes the public key of the certificate’s issuer and a signature that it can make on the private key of some other entity. It defines a lot of other stuff too: the types of signature algorithms that can be used, revocation and certificate path validation, and more.
Certificates are stored locally on a computer in a special storage location called a certificate store. Windows stores two certificate stores: the Local Machine Certificate Store (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) and the Current User Certificate Store (under HKEY_CURRENT_USER). You can view the certificates in these locations with the MMC console or with system APIs. You can even import certificates from other sources into the system stores.
