Mushroom Spores – Buying Mushroom Spores in the UK
We are the UK’s one-stop Mushroom Buddies, stocking a wide variety of cultures and growing kits, as well as spore syringes, cultures for transfer & isolations & more. Our work is conducted in H14 laminar clean air and our products are available to buy online, by phone or in person.
Mushroom spores are microscopic and contain the genetic blueprint for new mushrooms. Spores are harvested from the basidia lining the gills of the mushroom cap and can be collected using a spore trap or a microscope. Once collected, the spores are placed in a sterile culture medium and kept in a dark room until ready to be used for cultivation.
Exploring the Fascinating World of Mushroom Spores in the UK
PF Classic is an old-school strain that was first popularised in the 1970s. Its elongated spores make it ideal for microscopy enthusiasts and feature mesmerizing colors. The strain is also known for its potency and high yields.
The spores of Aleurodiscus gigasporus are larger than those of most other basidiomycetous species, measuring 29-34 x 22-28 m (Fig 2B). They have an ellipsoidal shape and are discharged by the hilar appendix. It is unlikely that fracture force scales in proportion to spore volume because the spore–spore connection consists of two tiny patches of closely appressed cell wall material. This limits the fraction of surface tension energy that is converted to kinetic energy (Fig 3).
Spore counts are lowest in November and February. The average monthly count rises from April through July and reaches its peak in August. Spore counts then decline to a low level in September.
